Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal condition that is often difficult to diagnose and treat. That being said, there are options available to help patients relieve pain associated with the condition. Patients suffering from fibromyalgia often feel like they will have to live with their pain forever. But there are ways to combat your pain and get you back to your normal self.
Fibromyalgia Causes & Symptoms
Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, typically causing chronic pain and other negative symptoms. The underlying cause of fibromyalgia is not fully known. However, doctors are pretty sure it results from a combination of factors that can include: genetics, physical trauma, and infections.
There are several symptoms that can indicate fibromyalgia. Here are a few of the more common symptoms of fibromyalgia:
- Specifically a constant dull, aching pain throughout the body.
- General fatigue. Feeling constantly exhausted.
- Difficulty focusing or concentrating.
Sometimes these symptoms appear after an acute injury, and other times they build gradually over time. Whatever the case, these symptoms should be investigated and properly treated right away.
Fibromyalgia Treatment Options
Successfully treating fibromyalgia starts with an accurate diagnosis. The condition can be tricky to diagnose because its symptoms are vague (general fatigue and holistic bodily aches). Diagnosis usually begins by ruling out other potential causes of the pain. To that end, your doctor may order blood tests, or medical imaging tests (MRI, CT scan) to cross any other conditions off the list. There is no known cure for fibromyalgia at this time. As such, treatment is geared at controlling the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This can be done through various prescription drugs (pain relievers, anti-depressants), as well as therapy, including ketamine therapy.
